Our Food

Yorkshire is a place of long held traditions and if it’s the taste of ancient, well-guarded Yorkshire recipes you’re craving for, look no further than Maggie’s proper homemade cakes.

All items are made in the kitchen at Dale Head Farm, from where there are usually delicious smells wafting out of the kitchen door!

Following Maggie's huge success at Farmer’s markets throughout North Yorkshire, you can now enjoy her cakes at her very own tea room at Dale Head Farm!

GREAT FOOD, HOMEMADE ON-SITE

We offer a good variety of food, including sandwiches, soup when the days are cooler, and all kinds of cakes. We also serve a selection of different teas and coffees, including large pots of loose leaf Yorkshire tea and ground coffee from Taylors of Harrogate. Our cold drinks include a very special homemade Elderflower cordial!

Everything is homemade on the premises using local ingredients whenever possible and we offer a "daily special” which changes each week. (Special requests have also been known to be catered for!!!) On colder days why not try one of our delicious homemade soups?

Choose from delights such as Yorkshire Tea bread , scones with homemade jam and cream, as well as peculiarities such as “Funeral Biscuits”, “Courting Cake” and “Moggy”!

GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS

We also provide gluten free sandwiches and more traditional cakes such as chocolate brownie, coffee walnut, and of course, flapjack – we make a rather delicious gluten free lemon drizzle cake!!!!

LOCALLY SOURCED

Ingredients when possible are sourced locally, e.g. the honey for our flapjacks is from just a mile down the road, eggs are from the farm chickens, we use locally cured ham and our preserves all all homemade.

SOME OF OUR SPECIALITIES

Here are just a few example recipes of Maggie’s cakes:

- "Courting Cake" – Traditionally made by factory girls for the man they had their eye on to impress him – Maderia/Victoria sponge laced with cream and strawberries.

- "Moggy" – Traditional Yorkshire ginger biscuit/cake made with stem ginger– the name Moggy comes from the norse flour moggi.

- "Fruit Scones" – Reading through our visitors book you'll see that our scones are the most popular item we serve. They're made to a special recipe with a secret ingredient and served with Longley Farm cream and strawberry jam!

- "Funeral Biscuits" – These are a caraway and shortbread biscuit with a heart in the middle and were traditionally given at Yorkshire funerals in Victorian times in memory of the deceased. A wrap with details of the persons life was given with the biscuits. They were given away on the local Lyke Wake Walk. Rather jolly really!
